TELLING STORIES THE PHYSICAL, IMMERSIVE WAY

WHO AM I?

I’m Hannu Salonen, a film and television director who grew up between languages, cultures and stories. Cinema became my way of making sense of the world — not only through words and ideas, but through bodies, movement, space, sound and rhythm. I want stories to be experienced physically as well as emotionally: immersive worlds that draw the audience in and allow them to feel before they begin to analyse.

My natural habitat is somewhere between a film set, an editing suite and a sauna.

I have never felt at home in a single genre or category of storytelling. What draws me is the freedom to move between tones, worlds and emotional registers — from comedy to crime, from satire to suspense, from intimate human stories to larger-than-life cinematic journeys. That range has never been a strategy. It is simply a reflection of curiosity, and of my desire to keep discovering new ways of telling stories.

Whatever the form, I approach the work with the same values: emotional truth, visual precision, tonal confidence and a deep respect for craft. I want stories to entertain and connect, to unsettle or uplift, and sometimes to carry us beyond the ordinary. Just as important to me is coherence — the moment when performance, image, space, sound and rhythm cease to feel like separate elements and become one living, breathing whole.

If there is one thread running through my work, it is openness: to people, to contradiction, to collaboration and to the unexpected. I feel genuinely fortunate that my path as a director continues to let me grow, change and follow stories wherever they lead.
