EXPLORING THE HUMAN CONDITION
WHO AM I AND WHY?
I’m Hannu Salonen, a director who grew up between languages, cultures, and stories. Cinema became my way of making sense of the world — a place where emotion meets structure and chaos finds rhythm. I make films and series that aim to move people, because I believe stories shape who we are, how we see others, and how we remember. My natural habitat is somewhere between a film set, an editing suite, and a sauna.
I have never felt at home in just one genre or one category of storytelling. What has always drawn me is the freedom to move between different tones, worlds, and emotional registers — from comedy to crime, from satire to suspense, from intimate human stories to larger-than-life cinematic journeys. For me, that range has never been a strategy, but a reflection of curiosity and of my wish to keep discovering new ways of telling stories.
Whatever the form, I always try to approach the work with the same values: emotional truth, visual precision, and a deep respect for craft. I want stories to entertain, to connect, to move, and sometimes to lift us for a moment out of the ordinary. Just as important to me is coherence — the feeling that even very different elements can come together as one living, breathing whole.
If there is one thread running through my work, it is perhaps this openness. I feel genuinely lucky that my path as a director has allowed me to keep growing, keep changing, and keep following stories wherever they lead.
